Otis Fishing Report UPDATE for August 4, 2023
We shut down just after 6:15 p.m. Katmai time. Otis showed up again on Brooks Falls cam shortly after. 🙂 That left us with a LOT of overnights to review!
For the TL;DR crowd: The Magic Fish Workbook counts from midnight to midnight Katmai time. And from midnight to midnight August 4 the official count is 0 Fish + 2 Scraps. (But watch this space for the next post coming right up faster than Alice’s Salmon Special! 😉
About last night’s activity:
We started writing this post in play-by-play mode while watching, but that was about to be a book unto itself… So we’ll just mention two items we can speak to generally which describe Otis’ evening.
First, Otis had a fish-driven kind of Wanderlust going on last night — he was all over the place! Behind the Kiddie Pool… behind the Jacuzzi… at the Sandbar… around the back side of the Platform… returning at the front side of the Platform… Alice’s… Wallflower’s Wall… J Rock… lightning fast Jacuzzi bath… standing on (all the) rocks… salad bars… Platform side leaving… returning… rinse… repeat… and just before the stroke of midnight his time, he landed in his Office (a minute). It was like us looking for our lost car keys! But it was all in slow mo, because that’s how Otis operates. So when we say Otis is a conservative Energy Aware Bear, what we really mean is that he expends no more energy than is necessary. And since he couldn’t get into his Office for long periods and the fish were absent, he felt it necessary to expend more energy, and so he did.
Second, Otis was seen “begging” last night, and our chat’s collective human emotions were out in full force (as one would expect!). We all know begging, scrapping, and pirating are viable ways to wine and dine (or whine and dine, for some). But to me, “begging” infers that the bear with the fish is going to gift something to the approaching bear. So, for some perspective, I look at “begging” as the pre-cursor to either pirating or scrapping. A pirate can “beg” to get close enough to pirate; and a scrapper is just the first one in line for a scrap. 🙂 It’s not the first time Otis has done it, and (my view) there is nothing humiliating about it. ♥ Otis LOVES scraps — they’re good nutrition when the fish are absent.
Second post will be up before you can say “FISH COUNT”…
