Otis Fishing Report

Otis Fishing Report for August 13, 2023
At the midnight hour, Otis is in his Office, diligently inspecting fish, as Grazer pops by to check on him (probably) and Otis pays her no attention (definitely). He’s alert and looking lively after his 9-hour nap yesterday.

Straight out of the box, Grazer, who continues to play through today. She catches one and pauses to eat it in front of Otis. We love her as much as the next chatter, but this move (unreasonably) activated Irked Mode. 😉 Otis, of course, didn’t give her a second glance (nor a first glance, actually).

The last few nights, Grazer (no, this isn’t going to be a Grazer Fishing Report) is like the Energizer Bunny running around the Far Pool and is more than a little distracting, that girl. Mind you, we tweaked a setting here or there and are watching Overnights at 8.8x speed… that could have something to do with the bunny analogy. 😉

We’re almost an hour and a half into the new day before Otis has the opportunity to inspect another fish. But we dare say it is worth the wait — look at the SIZE of it on Brooks Falls cam!! Good reminder to us all that even when Otis gets fewer fish on a given day, he’s undoubtedly heading into Fat Land where he may well steal the nickname “CHUNK” from 32!

At 2:00 a.m., as Grazer is in and out, in and out, in and out, like the Energizer Bunny she’s become, Otis moves over to the Conveyor during one of her “out” moments. Someone comes down the Boulder (dang, was that Grazer from the other direction now??), and Otis moves back to his Office.

At 3:00 a.m., Brooks Falls cam pulls back wide, and we lose Otis in the bugs and rain. It’s a couple of hours later and the cam zooms in to Otis chewing. We’ve maintained a philosophy of not counting any fish we don’t actually see for ourselves… but it sure feels like we need to make an exception because of all the things Otis might be doing alone in his Office, talking to himself is not one of them. 😉 So… FISH!

Immediately after that, another WHOPPER of a FISH! Otis took a few bites out of this one and then hesitated, and then released it. We’re counting it as a high-grade, and I know we keep saying “that one must’ve smelled fishy,” but, no, really — we think there was something fishy about this one. 😀

Otis quickly catches another, and then Brooks Falls goes wide again and Otis isn’t visible anywhere for a while (Brooks Low is sketch today). Bear activity increases at the Falls, and we get the occasional glimpse of Otis in his Office, including these Iconic Otis looks on Brooks Falls cam.

About 9:15 a.m. there’s an intruder in Otis personal space — pretty sure that was 151 Walker, as Personal Space Invasion is his style. As already established, however, Otis doesn’t give a salmon scrap about the hierarchy shenanigans, and he heads over to the Conveyor. When his Office clears out, Otis returns to it, and then at 9:45 a.m., he exits toward Riffles.

Otis heads to Alice’s to see if the Salmon Scrapple Buffet is open — the buffet is closed, so Otis meanders about Alice’s a bit considering his options. We follow him on both Brooks Falls and Riffles cams

The rain is coming down pretty hard, and while we can’t possibly be inside his head, it seems like it’d be rather refreshing (says the reporter sitting in 90-degree weather very far away from Alaska). Otis and his favorite Alice confer, unaware that Riffles cam is recording their every move.

Otis thinks long and hard… to snooze or not to snooze, that is the question. Finally, he crawls into his Bank Bunk. He freshens up the linens and gives them a good sniff. “Who’s been sleeping in my bed?” [Oh, wait, that’s Goldilocks’ line and not the bears’…] Not satisfied with whatever (or whomever’s) scent is in his bed sheets, Otis digs some more. He sniffs some more. He digs some more.

Thinking the linens are adjusted to his satisfaction, Otis gives them the booty test on Brooks Falls cam.

And about 10:15 a.m. in Katmai, a big ol’ bear curls up for snoozles. Chatters were fretting about Otis sleeping in the rain, but it seems like the only difference here is that we’re seeing him sleep in the rain. 🙂 We think he actually looks pretty cozy in his muddied bed of (maybe) soft river bank dirt, and the tree canopy has to be a little relief from the drizzle. ♥ And, no, I do NOT have an entire folder full of photos of Otis sleeping… what are you talking about?!

Otis has a rude awakening at 11:00 a.m. as Walker plays through on Brooks Falls cam.

Otis decides no more snoozles and moseys over to his Office. Weirdly, Walker leaves the Conveyor on Otis’ arrival. Hmmm… maybe there IS something to this hierarchy thing after all… Or maybe not. Walker returns for a lil chit chat with our boy, and Otis moves over to Wallflower’s Wall.

Everything is calm (including no fish) until 12:15 p.m., when Walker walks up to Otis to grumble. Otis grumbles back. Walker leaves. Walker returns. Otis goes to Alice’s. We’re going out on a limb here to say that there is no problem today which wouldn’t be solved by fish.

And in the meantime, 164 Bucky Dent returns, and everyone — meaning all of chat and Walker too — gets distracted. And Otis sliiiiides to the right and right into his Office while no one is looking. 😉

Later, Walker comes back at Otis, and Otis resists, albeit mildly. Walker neither advances nor backs down, and Otis slooooowly slides to the left to Wallflower’s Wall. Walker advances. Otis says, “GET THE FISH BACK ALREADY!” and Walker does. Otis sliiiiides to the right and settles back into his Office.

As we all know, Otis is quite adaptable. When the fish are slow, he tries different spots and new moves. Here, Riffles cam captures Otis practicing his best John Travolta Saturday Night Fever pose in the Far Pool! No, it did not scare the fish into his belly — in fact, the fish were stayin’ alive! (Gosh, that was bad, but I hope it made you laugh!)

Shortly after, Otis returns to his Office. And then we begin again. Walker in, Otis out, reverse, Walker in, Otis out, reverse…

Eventually, Otis heads to Alice’s for the Salmon Scrapple Buffet — open for one serving! And, of course, to stand on rocks, as captured on Riffles cam by MaryM Otis 2016

At 2:45 p.m., Otis -finally- gets his Office back and departs shortly thereafter because… guess who. lol On his way to wherever he’s going, Otis picks up a scrap. Serendipity is nice. 🙂 Otis meanders across the River, and at 3:00 p.m. Katmai time, he goes for snoozles in his space near the Platform.

Total count for August 13 midnight to 3:00 p.m. is 5 Fish + 1 High-Grade + 2 Scraps. Stats update coming in a minute because I know that 5 fish has got YOU down more than Otis. 😉

Thank you, if you got this far, and wishes for fishes!! ♥
