Otis Fishing Report UPDATE for July 26, 2023
We’re here to talk about a Bear. A special Bear. Magical even! So magical that even on a day when not a salmon was stirring, thousands would gather around their old timey computers, cracked handheld devices, and large screen televisions just to watch his one-of-kind Zen. 🙂 As user bjb117 put it yesterday: “… one beautiful, floppy eared bear can make so many people happy…” (I hear that!)
But first, some housekeeping because inquiring minds want to know!
The Counting: The Magical Workbook has 4 columns for every day starting with the day the cams go live. It lists every minute starting with midnight Katmai time (and my time zone, so I don’t have to do math by myself). Whenever something notable happens, I jot it down at the time it occured. The counts for any given Fishing Report are from midnight until I go to bed (not very scientific). I add “bed to midnight” fish in the morning, so each day eventually is a 24-hour tally.
When Otis gets a nom of any sort, I type the location — Office, Conveyor, Jacuzzi, J Rock, Alice’s, or Other — and nom type — Scraps, Fish, Pirate, DOA, High Grade, or Sniffs (catch-and-release) — and those items total at the top. There’s a cumulative tally for location of fishes devoured on another part of the workbook. And I also have some special formulas that subtract hours and minutes and convert to Katmai time because I like spreadsheets, but not actual math!
The Overnights: Seeing as how I have to sleep some bits, I mark when I leave for the night, and then pick up on BF in the morning. I run trough the overnights at 5.5 speed and go through the same process until I’m live on cams again. I only do one cam because I also have to make a living (and salmon counts don’t pay the bills). 🙂
The No Counts: Between the overnights, losing Otis like I just did when I got up for water, and off-cam times, that means not every single fish is counted. This is important because people get bummed when the counts are low. But my counts aren’t the only fish Otis eats. Remember that, okay? 🙂
Now… adjustments to yesterday’s Fishing Report!
During the overnights, pirates invaded Otis’ usually quiet Office! Pirates, you say? ARGH! Yes! Pirates!! It was about 9:30 p.m. Katmai time, and Otis was finishing up some fish inspections when a huge fish tried to escape his view. But Otis was faster than that ol’ fish, and caught it in its prime. He looked forward to a fancy feast, but 807 was having none of that.
With the spirit of a young boar, Otis ran for it (yes, RAN, I tell you) — fish dangling in all its glory — and 807 pursued. Otis dodged to his right and weaved to his left and thought 807 would stop the chase, but no — 807 Wanted. That. Fish. He continued the pursuit until Otis decided his time was better spent in zen mode inspecting other fish. See the action yourself here in McKate’s video (provided to me by LTC):

Altogether, Otis total Fish Count for July 26 was 5 fish (about 25k calories) and 1 pirate (which would be… 0 calories lol).
And a Correction: If you read yesterday’s Fishing Report, you’ll recall I wasn’t in front of my PC when all Otis broke out in the Kingdom. I dodged and weaved like a pirate in pursuit of a fish and dug down into the Basement, and I thought I got it all, starting at KRV and ending at Brooks Falls.
But eagle-eyed McKate caught Otis before that. If you love Otis — and I know you do — you’re going to want to watch this McKate video (THANK YOU TO LTC FOR THIS!):
Coming up next, today’s Fishing Report.
(Go take a break — gonna be a hot minute!)
